In the US, Kickstarter has helped 64,000 projects launch with almost $240 million in funding. Half are in film, video and music – artists bypassing big industry and using fan funding instead. But many are in technology, design and gaming. Kickstarter launches in the UK this year.

Anyone can start a project and ask for funding. Advertising it is down to them, though Kickstarter features projects on its homepage, which triples their success rate. Rewards are key: Pebble (a smart watch that raised $ 10 million in funding and sold out its first 85,000 units)...
