At the time of writing (early 2011) the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) was accountable to the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA).[1] The accountability of the police to the public has been a fundamental principle of British policing since the formation of the Metropolitan Police Force by Sir Robert Peel on 29 September 1829.
