In late 2009, Google unveiled ‘Goggles’, a visual search app for mobile. Goggles enables consumers to photograph objects and obtain search results in seconds. The technology recognises products, text and landmarks with remarkable accuracy. In late 2010, Google released a new version with more functionality, including maps, barcode recognition and translation.

Google has already begun to coin the verb ‘to Goggle’. This could be to mobile search what ‘Googling’ is to web search. It has the potential to usurp QR codes, SMS shortcodes and most other forms of tagging as the default way...
