The formation of the UK's first post-war coalition Government, conjoining the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties, was preceded by a new element, for the UK, in election campaigning – a series of three televised 'Leaders' Debates'. These were billed as an historic opportunity for the British public to watch the three party leaders – Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg – debate policy head-to-head. We were supposed to gain a much clearer idea of the candidates' messages, and much more policy information on which to base our voting decisions.
