The 4A's (also known as the American Association of Advertising Agencies) blew through its record number of submissions for its annual competition, the Jay Chiat Awards. And, it was no surprise that the vast number of entries produced a relatively long short list of 46 finalists in eight categories.

One immediate trend visible from this year's Chiats, the winners of which will be announced on September 22, is that planning has become a multi-disciplinary program:
