A cold, grey day fails to extinguish Brighton's charms, but hardly encourages thoughts of spring and inspiration...

After Kevin McLean, conference organizer, had welcomed a record audience to the MRS's 50th anniversary conference, MRS Chairman Simon Lidington introduced the opening session by setting out the industry's stall for a new paradigm: at the first conference, MR was still aiming for respectability by demonstrating its scientific credentials. By now, surely, what is needed is slightly less self-conscious science, and rather more imagination.
