In 1999, 19-year-old Shawn Fanning achieved celebrity status as the file-sharing industry's founder when he created www.Napster.com, a website that facilitated the sharing of music across the Internet. Napster's members could freely download other members' songs onto their own computers, an innovation that sent the music industry into a panic.
