Clothing designer Tommy Hilfiger began his career as a vendor of hippie fashions, eventually going to work for disco-era couturier Jordache. By the mid-1980s Hilfiger had enough name recognition within the industry to create his own line of clothing, which he did in 1985 with a preppy collection. He was unknown to the world, however, and the company launched a nearly $3 million advertising campaign that claimed, "The four Great American Designers for Men are [in Wheel of Fortunestyle]: R——L——, P——E——, C——K——, T——H——[Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis, Calvin Klein,...
