"This is the travel logo that taught many of the baby boomers to read their first printed words," Charles Goodrum and Helen Dalrymple wrote in Advertising in America, referring to the "Great Sign" of Holiday Inn motels, colored the same green as the federal interstate highway system directional signs. The sign featured a giant curved golden arrow, studded with lights, pointing weary travelers toward a good night's rest. Emblazoned across the green sign, in bold cursive script, were the words "Holiday Inn."
