In the early twentieth century, makers of cigarettes boosted sales of their products by offering premiums and coupons in cigarette packs. R.J. Reynolds's Camel line, however, bucked this trend. "Don't look for premiums or coupons," a famous disclaimer on the side of the Camel pack declared, "as the cost of the tobaccos blended in Camel Cigarettes prohibits the use of them." Thus Camel, which would become a market leader in the years between the world wars, started the industry's move away from promotional campaigns.
