Tylenol was the brand name for the analgesic acetaminophen manufactured by McNeil Consumer Products Company, a division of Johnson & Johnson. Tylenol was available first as a pediatric pain reliever in the mid-1950s, and in 1959 it became available in adult strength. It was not until aggressive advertising in the 1970s, however, that Tylenol became popular. It eventually became the best-selling over-thecounter pain reliever and one of the most universally recognized consumer products.
