Of the 114 motorcycle makers established in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century, Harley was the sole survivor. (The Indian Motorcycle Company was the last and biggest competitor to bow out of the business, in 1953.) Harley held a captive audience, with devotees at both ends of the social spectrum, from the "good" (almost every American police officer on motorcycle duty rode a Harley) to the "bad"...
