Late one February night in 1997, copywriter Tom Topolewski and art director Pete D'Agostino of D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles (DMB&B) in Troy, Michigan, were bouncing around ideas for the ad agency's Pontiac account when they, in Topolewski's words, "got on this Wile E. Coyote kick," referring to the adversary of the Road Runner. Both were cartoon characters and part of Warner Bros. Loony Tunes ensemble.
