Frito-Lay, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, Inc., was by 1999 the largest maker of snack foods in the United States. The company produced some of the top-selling snack food brands in the country, and the sales of Frito-Lay products accounted for about 50 percent of parent PepsiCo's sales.

For years the Tostitos brand of tortilla chips was one of the few underperforming items in Frito-Lay's stable of snack chips. Its sales performance began to improve in the 1990s, however, particularly after Frito-Lay introduced a humorous new ad campaign...
