AT&T Corp., formerly known as American Telephone and Telegraph Company, was a government-regulated monopoly for most of its existence and the largest corporation in the world during much of the twentieth century. The company was responsible for building most of the telephone network in the United States and enjoyed a certain incumbent's advantage even as courts and federal agencies began to allow competitors to make inroads into its turf during the 1960s and 1970s.
