BACKGROUND

Weight Watchers Slimming Clubs were started in the United States in 1963 by Jean Nidetch as group help weight loss classes for people with 10lbs or more to lose. The success of the classes led to the concept being launched in the UK in 1967. There were some 2,200 weekly classes in Britain (1986 figures).
