A passionate believer in freedom of thought, speech and information, the Chairman of the ASA fears that statutory regulation of the press, therefore advertising, is now a real prospect. The belated Press Council code of practice, after 36 years of inaction, has been anticipated by the recent national editors' code of ethics - the two may create muddle, and are unlikely to quench a parliamentary thirst for intervention.
