THE ADVENT OF DIGITAL AND SATELLITE BROADCASTING IN EUROPE

In 1997 digital satellite television became a commercial reality in Europe. The first digital package, Canal Satellite Numrique was launched on ASTRA in April 1996 and by the end of February 1998 there were 469 digital satellite channels operational and another forty-four in test, 201 of these channels broadcast via ASTRA(see Figure 1.)
