Way back in the mists of internet time – 1988 to be exact – a Finnish scientist invented the internet relay chat, "an application layer protocol that facilitates communication in the form of text". It was, according to Emi Gal, CEO Teads Studio, an early form of messaging app, like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. And it had a particular feature – bots that asked users a question, with those who responded fastest gaining points and climbing a leader board.
