The annual national holiday weeks – in which people across China flock to the shops in numbers unimaginable elsewhere – might remind outsiders of the Christmas shopping season in the West, only better, because they come three times a year.

But while the traffic chaos, crowded stores, ringing cash registers and retail stress of Christmas are evident during Golden Week holiday periods, the shopping process – what motivates people to buy and how they go about it – is entirely different.
