Where have all the Hispanic college students gone?
The number of college-age students has been growing, yet Hispanics remain grossly underrepresented among college attendees and college graduates. In fact, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, only 12% of Hispanic adults currently have a bachelor's degree, compared with 30.5% of non-Hispanic whites. (Source: U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, Status and Trends in the Education of Hispanics) That's a worrying trend not only for its long-term consequences within the Latino community — Latinos' becoming perennially left behind — but also for its negative impact in the future U.S. economy. Latinos, after all, represent an ever-larger percentage of the nation's workers.
