Colombia has lived under the shadow of war for over 60 years. Its adversary is the largest and oldest insurgent group in the Americas: the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, aka the FARC.
As well as guerrilla and conventional military action against Colombian political, military, and economic targets; the FARC conducts bombings, unlawful killings, mortar attacks, kidnappings, forced displacement, extortion and hijackings. It primarily funds itself through ransom kidnappings, extortion and taxation of the illegal drug trade with estimates suggesting the FARC supplies more than 50% of the world's cocaine, according to the DEA1. The FARC is considered a terrorist group by the Colombian government, the European Union and the United States Department of State2.
