As the Internet and ebusiness have exploded, so too have concerns over marketers' collection of individual consumer data: Who's using technology, such as cookies or Web bugs, to gather what information from whom? Who's informing them about it ahead of time?
Advertisers, consumers, and government officials share those concerns, but how to address them remains very much an issue of debate, especially as ad industry attempts at selfregulation compete with calls for governmentimposed remedies.
