Getting to Next – Childhood Obesity

From “The Biggest Loser” to “Shaq's Big Challenge” to daily headlines in the press, obesity is front and center. With many parents recognizing that their children are obese or at risk for becoming overweight, this issue is a concern at both the national and personal levels for many consumers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the percentage of children ages 6–19 who are overweight has nearly doubled since the late 1980s and early 1990s and has tripled since the late 1970s. 1 In the 2005 Yankelovich MONITOR, parents of kids age 6–17 listed “making sure my children eat right” as their second-highest-rated challenge (behind “making sure homework gets done”) among a list of 19 challenges parents face regularly.
