Emerging Industry Overview: Distance Learning

Industry Snapshot

Whether knowledge seekers are around the corner or around the world, distance learning offers a viable alternative to traditional learning methods. Also known as distance education, this approach features a wide array of training formats including print, audio, video, satellite, and Internet-based courses. These may be combined in creative ways using prerecorded or interactive technology.

Distance learning involves the provision of educational programs to students who are not located on a school's physical campus. This broad definition allows for a diverse group of students to participate in options that are synchronous (classes that take place at specific times only) or asynchronous (classes that occur at flexible times).

Distance learning makes it possible for people with limited time or local options to efficiently achieve their goals. Still others are taking advantage of technology applications to update their skills for the workplace. The training site might be a satellite classroom, boardroom, community center, or home.
