For the first time in its history, the 2002 winner of the UK's Whitbread prize for new books of all kinds was a children's book The Amber Spyglass, by Philip Pullman. Although it is a children's book, if you take a look at the 242 reviews on Amazon you will see that adults are reading it and raving about it. J K Rowling and Lemony Snicket are also authors whose books, although aimed at children, are read regularly by adults.
