oftel opposes bt’s schools scheme

01 June 1997

TELECOMS REGULATOR Don Cruikshank is opposing BT’s interim scheme to provide free Internet links to schools in return for the lifting of the ban on providing down-the-line entertainment services. He believes BT’s proposals do not go far enough and is ready to force the telecoms giant to rethink its plans. Cruikshank has already told trade and industry secretary Margaret Beckett he believes a full review of broadcasting policy should precede the lifting of any ban. The you-scratch-my-back deal between BT and Labour was done when the party was still in opposition.
