Yahoo! Withdraws Gambling Ads after NFL Protest

15 December 2000

The world’s leading online portal Yahoo! yesterday announced it was removing ads for gambling websites from its pages covering American football, following a complaint from its partner the National Football League .

Like many American sports bodies, the NFL keeps any association with gambling at arm’s length. But Yahoo!, which since October has owned widely-coveted rights to broadcast radio coverage of games, posted ads for internet casinos and sports betting sites on football-related pages.

The NFL’s Brian McCarthy explained that the body discovered the ads last week. “We expressed concern, we made a phone call to our friends at Yahoo!, they said they will take them down, and we'll move on,” he said.

He added that the mishap would not affect Yahoo!’s chances of winning the contract to run from April.

Tanya Antonucci, Yahoo! Sports’ director of production, declared that the offending ads would be shifted to pages with no NFL logos or content.
