Wal-Mart Launches Classified Service

04 June 2008

BENTONVILLE, Arkansas: Wal-Mart has launched a free online classified service in conjunction with Oodle.com, a website founded by former executives of eBay and Excite, which offers users the chance to buy and sell everything from real estate to pets.

The world's biggest retailer began trialling Walmart.com Classifieds last week, and there are currently around 30 million items listed, largely as a result of its tie-up with Oodle.

It is accessed via Wal-Mart's own website and will reach around five million consumers every month, through newspaper websites, online communities and web portals such as Lycos.

Wal-Mart claims the new service "further connects our community of 130 million customers who shop the Wal-Mart brand each week".

No details have yet been provided on the nature of the tie-up with Oodle.com, which was founded three years ago, or the tenure of the pilot scheme.

Oodle ceo Craig Donato said: "This is good for Wal-Mart because it provides a different experience for consumers, and it benefits Oodle because it extends the reach of our network."
