Wal-Mart Eyes Russian Market

BENTONVILLE, Arkansas: Wal-Mart Stores has recruited German retail expert Stephan Fanderl to explore expansion opportunities in Russia and eastern Europe.

Fanderl, erstwhile head of hypermarkets and supermarkets in Germany for Rewe, will take up the role of president, emerging markets, east, at the world's number one retailer.

Wal-Mart has been mulling possibilities in the region for some time, studying potential partners that include Russia's biggest food retailer, X5, which has contacts with UK giant Tesco and French-headquartered Carrefour.
