Volkswagen to Launch Twenty New Models

22 February 2006

Twenty new models will drive off production lines within five years as German auto maker Volkswagen goes back to its "people's car" roots.

The ambitious plan, unveiled by head of the VW brand group division Wolfgang Bernhard, is steering the company away from its ill-fated move into the luxury market, especially in the US where it has failed to impress.

VW hopes Concept A, which combines the features of a SUV and a coupé at a cost of between $20,000 (€16.5k; £11.5k) and $30,000, will turn round US sales. The company is expected to post a loss of up to $1.2 billion in North America for 2005.

Bernhard believes Concept A "is breaking new ground in America for VW customers". He adds that at least ten of the promised new models will be "entirely new" while the rest will be based on existing lines.
