Viz Moves from Brown to Brown in £6.4m Sale

29 May 2001

Publisher I Feel Good, owned by former editor of men’s magazines Loaded and GQ, James Brown, has purchased adult comic Viz from [confusingly] John Brown Publishing.

The £6.4 million purchase also includes Bizarre magazine, which features strange photographs, and paranormal title The Fortean Times.

Viz – whose characters include Sid the Sexist and The Fat Slags – has a predominantly male circulation of around 200,000, down from its zenith of over half a million during the 1980s.

“I'm chuffed to bits,” declared (James) Brown. “I used to sell Viz on the streets of Leeds and I worked as a consultant on it two years ago and loved it. I think it’s a work of genius. The team who write it are brilliant so I won’t be changing anything, although we may look to go monthly rather than bi-monthly.”

Continued Felix Dennis, ex-hippie and Oz trial defendant, now publishing tycoon and chairman of IFG: “Our key objective is the successful integration of Viz, Bizarre and Fortean Times in the IFG infrastructure. Revenues and profits generated from the new titles will give the company a basis from which to launch magazine titles and websites and acquire further businesses.”
