Vivendi PC Giveaway Could Boost French Web Usage

French internet usage could rise 2%–3% as a result of a PC giveaway by Franco-Canadian media and utilities group Vivendi Universal.

In the first stage of an international computer giveaway scheme, around 110,000 PCs with internet access will be distributed to Vivendi employees in France. This could add around 250,000 French web users to the nation’s current total of 10 million.

In all, the group plans to distribute around 260,000 personal computers to employees across the globe, in return for a $2.75 monthly usage fee. Participants in the scheme, conducted in association with US-based PeoplePC and Vivendi’s Vizzavi portal, will also receive free internet access (excluding telecom costs).
