Barry Diller is to take charge of Vivendi Universal’s American entertainment assets while a new structure is formalised.
The media mogul will reportedly become co-chief executive of the US media units, which include Universal Music Group and Universal Studios, alongside Vivendi ceo Jean René Fourtou.
Diller will head the informal set-up while a long-term strategy – thought to include a partial demerger – is hammered out over the coming months.
He is already chairman of Vivendi Universal Entertainment, a venture set up when Vivendi purchased the cable-TV assets of his USA Networks last year [WAMN: 18-Dec-01]. Under the new structure, he adds control of units such as Universal Music to his VUE empire.
Helping him run Vivendi’s US entertainment portfolio is said to be Kenneth Cron, head of the computer games division, who will reportedly be made chief operating officer of the new set-up.
