Verizon Announces US Mobile TV Service

NEW YORK: US telco Verizon Wireless is launching what it claims to be the "first truly live mobile TV service". The company, a joint venture between Verizon Communications and the UK's cellphone giant Vodafone, is offering viewers access to eight channels of live television.

Denny Strigl, Verizon's chief operating officer, is confident there will be demand for the new 24-hour service, which will include full-length programs from networks such as MTV, CBS, Fox and NBC.

Verizon plans to expand the number of channels to around twenty by the end of the year and increase the availability of compaitible handsets. Initially the service will be available only on two new phones from LG Electronics and Samsung.
