Under Pressure, Vodafone CEO Ousts Marketing Boss

10 March 2006

NEWBURY, UK - Arun Sarin, Vodafone's chief executive, under pressure after issuing three profit warnings in as many months, moved on Wednesday to tighten his grip on the cellphone operator's board by firing head of marketing and product development,Peter Bamford .
The departure follows persistent reports of boardroom tension. Sarin has now cleared the board of all the senior executives most closely associated with his predecessor, Sir Christopher Gent.
Vodafone claims it is "undertaking a fundamental review of the group marketing function", but would not elaborate on its new marketing strategy, nor name a successor to Bamford, the pain of whose passing will be assuaged by around £800,000 ($1.39m; €1.17m) in compensation.
