US Satellite Radio Awards Shock Jock Stock

09 January 2006

Although infamous US shock jock Howard Stern will today (December 9) celebrate his long-awaited debut on Sirius Satellite Radio by uttering his first foul word via space, his new employer has already awarded him around $220 million (€181m; £125m) in company stock.

The golden hello is part of Stern's $500m, five year deal with Sirius, which has met agreed targets for gaining new subscribers.

America's number two satellite radio broadcaster, with its 120 commercial-free stations, announced it had hit the 3.3 million subscriber mark at the end of 2005 [WAMN: 29-Dec-2005].

And hopes are high that slack-mouthed Stern will help the company close the gap on larger rival, XM Satellite Radio.

The latter has revealed its subscriber numbers have reached six million.
