US Retail Boom Continues Through February

08 March 2004

Early signs are that US retail sales remained strong in February.

The International Council of Shopping Centers' monthly measure of sales in stores open at least a year surged 6.7% last month, the best year-on-year growth since April 2000.

The discount sector continued to perform strongly. Wal-Mart smashed its 3%-5% forecast with a 6.2% increase in same-store sales, while rival Target climbed 7.5%. Department store groups Federated and J C Penney also had a good month, with respective rises of 9% and 12.1%.
