US Private-Label Sales Outpace Branded Goods

16 April 2004

America's private-label industry has grown significantly faster than the branded product sector since the turn of the millennium, according to new figures from AC Nielsen.

The research giant found that sales of retailers' own-label items had surged 16% since 2000, double the growth rate of products from brand manufacturers.

Nielsen identified around 800 categories of private-label goods. Among the biggest are medication, vitamins, pet food and paper products, each of which is worth over $1 billion (€0.84bn; £0.56bn) in annual sales.
