US Manufacturing Growth Hits Twenty-Year High

03 December 2003

Stateside manufacturing growth hit a twenty-year high in November, according to a new survey.

The Institute of Supply Management's index of factory activity jumped from 57.0 in October to 62.8 last month -- the highest level since December 1983. Any figure above 50.0 indicates expansion.

Production and new orders surged in nearly every industry, and -- significantly -- manufacturers expanded their workforces after three years of layoffs.
