US Judge Slams Dell for False Ads

29 May 2008

NEW YORK: IT giant Dell Computer deceived customers via false advertising that offered purportedly low interest rates which in reality turned out to be far higher than advertised.

Supreme Court Judge Joseph Teresi said the company and its finance arm used dubious tactics to get money from people, which also included abusive debt collecting and outright fraud.

The case against Dell was brought by New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who filed the lawsuit last May.

He said the court would now pursue the suit further to assess the amount of damages Dell might have to pay to customers.

In response the company says: "We don't agree with this decision and will be defending our position vigorously. Our goal has been, and continues to be, to provide the best customer experience possible.

"We are confident that when the proceedings are finally completed the court will determine that only a relatively small number of customers have been affected."
