US Consumers Set for High Spend Holiday Season

RESTON, Virginia: Online retailers in the US could be in for a bumper holiday season as consumers' web spending is predicted to break the $24 billion mark (€18.37bn; £12.42bn), according to web data provider comScore Networks.

The researcher says that figure would mark an increase of 24% on last year, and that $6.35bn (€4.86bn; £3.28bn) was spent online during the first nieneteen days of November - up 23% on the same period last year.

ComScore expects around $600 million to be spent on purchases today, the first Monday after Thanksgiving - historically the busiest retail shopping day of the year.

Many consider it the "official" beginning to the Christmas season with many retailers opening and offering massive discounts to attract people to their stores.

Pollster Zogby Interactive, however, says its latest survey reveals 35% of shoppers wait until the start of December to begin buying online or at the mall. The younger the consumer the longer they are likely to delay starting their seasonal shopping.

The report also found that online shopping trends are climbing. Free shipping is an important factor among 87% of those surveyed. Two out of three shoppers said they planned to buy at least one gift online this year, while 42% said they planned to spend more than $200 via the web.
