US Consumers Get Edgy

The closely watched monthly report from the Conference Board, released Tuesday, shows US consumer confidence declining for the second month in succession.

The March consumer confidence index dropped two points to 102.4 - its lowest point since November, when the reading was 92.6 - and down from a revised 104.4 in February when the index fell by a revised 0.7 point. Analysts were disappointed by the March reading, having predicted a level of 103.

A second indicator, the expectations index, which monitors consumers' outlook for the next six months, declined to 93.7 from 96.1 in February. While a third measurement, the present-situation index, slipped to 115.6 from 116.8.

Nonetheless, the report declared the overall assessment of current conditions by consumers remained quite favourable.
