New figures from the Federal Communications Commission show a surge in US broadband take-up.
During the first six months of 2003, the number of stateside broadband connections climbed 18% to 23.6 million, out of a total internet population of around 170m.
Most broadband users connect through cable. Some 13.7m homes and businesses subscribe to high-speed internet through cable operators, while 7.7m do so through DSL (digital subscriber line).
