US Auto Sales: Toyota Waxes, US Marques Wane

DETROIT: No cause for celebrations in Motown, as the September sales figures confirm the worsening plight of America's indigenous auto marques, declining in the shadows cast by the Rising Sun and other Asian manufacturers.

Across the board, September auto sales rose by a meager 1.9% to 1.35 million, marginally up year-on-year from a downbeat month in which sales were badly hit by fallout from Hurricane Katrina.

Toyota extended its lead over DaimlerChrysler, narrowly failing to overtake US No. 2 manufacturer Ford despite the latter's 4.6% improvement in sales. General Motors too was victim to the malaise, with sales down by 3.1%
