UK on Road to Electronic Radio Audience Measurement

The UK's only recognised radio audience measurement body, RAJAR, has begun a three year process of introducing audiometers.

Three types of meters were put through their paces recently during controlled tests in a variety of listening environments. The aim of the trials is to replace RAJAR's current paper diary system with electronic metering by 2007.

The organisation is currently in a legal dispute with the Wireless Group - controlled by Rupert Murdoch outside his NewsCorp empire - which owns talkSport and a string of other minor commercial stations.

The group claims RAJAR's delay in introducing electronic metering is skewing audience figures leading to a loss of ad revenues.

RAJAR says the electronic meters it tested and rejected last year were not up to standard.
