UK TV Channels Report Slide in Audience Share

LONDON: Publicly-owned but commercially-funded UK television broadcaster Channel 4 has seen ratings slide 11% during the past year, according to latest figures from researcher BARB (Broadcast Audience Research Board).

Channel 4 is the hardest hit of the five national TV networks, followed by RTL-owned Five, which saw its audience share to December 5 this year slip 8.8%, compared with the whole of 2006.

BBC1, the flagship channel of the publicly-funded broadcasting giant, also experienced a slight fall in audience share of 3.5% to stand at 22%, compared with 22.8% last year.

However, it remains the most popular channel. Its BBC2 stablemate faced a 3.4% fall in audience share to 8.5%, down from 8.8% last year.

Flagging commercial broadcaster ITV reported the smallest audience share decline of just 1.5% at its main ITV1 channel, thanks to growth in daytime viewing figures. Audience share stood at 19.3% for the year to date, compared with 19.6% in 2006.
