09 October 2003

Britain's manufacturing sector has suffered its biggest production decline in nearly a year, new figures show.

The Office for National Statistics found a 0.6% fall in manufacturing output in August – the first downturn since April and the most severe for eleven months. Analysts had been expecting a 0.2% rise.

In addition, the ONS revised its July growth figure down from 0.5% to 0.3%.
