UK Leisure Firm to Shed Marketing Jobs

UK leisure leviathan Whitbread is mulling major job cuts at its corporate headquarters.

The Luton-headquartered firm, whose brands include the Costa Coffee chain, family restaurants TGI Friday's and budget hotel network Premier Travel Inn, is reviewing 800 jobs, including marketing and communications roles.

It has already announced that sixteen senior executives will go - 20% of its top management - while individual brands will no longer have their own marketing, IT and other support teams. All these functions will be centralised in future.

In a bid to deliver better returns to shareholders, Whitbread is divesting itself of a number of businesses. It has sold its last London brewery site and former HQ, and is looking to shed its stake in the Britvic soft drinks operation. It will also sell its mid-market hotel brand Marriott.
