UK Channel Five Holds Back RTL Group's H1 Profits

28 August 2008

LUXEMBOURG: Announcing its "highest half-year net result ever" Gerhard Zeiler (pictured), ceo of Europe's largest commercial broadcaster RTL Group, unveiled pre-tax profits up by 3.2% to €515 million ($754.99m; £410.61m).

Profits in Germany, where the company is the top-rated TV station, soared 29% to €218m, although this was offset by a 29% plunge in operating income.

French channel M6, in which RTL has a 49% stake, paid €50m for rights to transmit the European football championship.

In the UK RTL-controlled Five just managed to break even, with operating income down by £4m and a 1.9% fall in ad revenues.

But Zeiler insists that Five will outperform the UK market in H2 and "not go into loss", even though British TV advertising in total is forecast to decline by 4%-5% this year.
